When a couple decides to start a family, we usually dive deep into name suggestions, parenting advice, and, of course, choosing the right doctor. But let’s be honest—how many of us actually think about the hospital itself? Not just how big or famous it is, but the actual experience it offers? I’ve realized that choosing the right hospital is just as important as choosing the right doctor.
During my own delivery experience, I was in the hospital for about 3-4 days because I had a C-section. My mom, mother-in-law, and husband were there with me in shifts—taking care of me and the baby. But you know what really left me disappointed? The hospital staff, especially the nurses.
In the daytime, you could at least see them around the maternity ward. But at night? They would literally disappear or be fast asleep. Yes, you read that right. We used to ring the bell or ask for help, and they would casually say, “We’re tired after so many deliveries, let us rest now.” Imagine being a new mom, recovering from major surgery, needing warm water, or just a helping hand to hold your baby—and being told that the staff is off-duty because they’re tired!
What hurt me more was that these were women themselves, and yet they couldn’t show a little empathy toward a fellow woman who had just given birth. Not even basic kindness. I was shocked.
And here’s the most ironic part—on the day I was discharged, suddenly the entire staff that had been “too tired” to help showed up. Not to check on me, but to ask for tips, gifts, and money. My mother, out of courtesy and culture, gave them some money so they could bless me and my baby. But deep inside, I kept thinking—do they really deserve it?
So mommies, here’s what I learned:
Choosing the right doctor is important, yes. But don’t forget to check the hospital’s overall environment too—Are the nurses helpful? Is the staff kind? Will they support you when you’re vulnerable and scared in the middle of the night?
Because in those few days, when your whole world changes, kindness and care matter more than anything else.
